Oil on canvas 30” x 60” 1993
This was a private commission to depict the battle, which was fought between the British fleet of Admiral Hawke and the French fleet of Admiral Conflans on 20th November, in a full gale and on a lee shore as the light faded. Hawke’s flagship, the Royal George, is shown flying his blue flag as Admiral of the Blue and the red flag for general chase.
Hawke is engaging the French 74 gun ship Thésée, which moments later capsized and sank. To the left of the painting the Magnanime followed by the Torbay are engaging the French Superbe.
